BIG NEWS! The first female watermelon flower opened! I was so excited that I snagged the only male flower open and pollinated it myself just to be sure. Here's hoping it sets fruit!
If you're interested in growing any sort of curcubit type plant (squash, cucumber, etc) you need to be able to tell which is a male and which is a female flower. On this picture if you look closely you can see what looks like a tiny green watermelon right behind the flower. If the flower gets pollinated successfully by a male flower (these do not have the tiny fruit) that little watermelon will grow into something that you get to eat later! If not it will just wither and fall off. Here's hoping!
